Now, where do we get started on logos?
Well, they are one of the first things that people will see when they come across your brand. People will make an immediate judgement about your brand based on the logo. It’s the apple to your pie (we’ll come back to this later).
Before you continue reading, pause and take a look at these logos. Which ones can you name?
We’re more than sure that you managed to guess all 4 of these brands. If you didn’t, where on earth have you been hiding for years?!
So, even though the brand names are not actually integrated into these logos, you are still able to easily identify the brand.
Not only do logos give your brand an identity and a meaning, but they also can be the reason they choose you over your competitors (Apple for example).
Logos are NOT the only thing you should be thinking about. What makes an even better logo is HAVING A FANTASTIC BRAND BEHIND IT.
For example, an extremely well known brand is the Nike logo. But did you have any idea that the logo itself only costed $35?! So, arguably, they aren’t just the ‘king of branding’ because of the logo, it’s because of their ENTIRE BRAND that they are where they are today. Here’s more information on the $35 Nike logo here.
More information in the “brand scheme of things”…
In short, your brand is your promise to your customers about what they can expect from your products/services. So it is extremely important to put time and effort into it, if you want those customers and business success!
There are so many elements to a brand. We won’t name them all here, but here are a few to remember:
- Colours, fonts, positioning and style are all things to think about. Where will your logo be placed on your products? What is your colour scheme?
- Target Audience
- Who are you going to be selling your products or services to? How will you reflect this in your branding?
- Name and Slogan
- Here is where you can deliver your brand’s message to people, by making a memorable name and catchy slogan.
Branding goes so much further than just a logo. Your brand covers absolutely everything about the business, which influences how potential customers perceive it.
Startups and small businesses tend to overlook the importance of branding as a whole and instead focus on what they see as the “fun parts”, such as the logo and slogan. However, what they don’t realise is that this will have a huge impact on their future business success.
Having a good brand increases the value of your business. A professional appearance and positive attributes are all huge influences on the success of your business.
Another crucial element to branding is the fact that it completely sets you apart from your competitors! What business owner doesn’t want to stand out from the crowd? People love a sense of familiarity. If they remember your brand as a quality provider, then you will encourage them to use you, because they are more likely to choose your product/service again, over your competitors. Great huh?
Examples of Branding (the good and the bad…)
Coca Cola are a fantastic example of a great brand. Why? Because they focus on a combination of quality, dedication to their people, consistency across platforms and a sophisticated brand message. All of their elements are spot on and polished.
It’s also important to remember that, even though a brand is popular, it doesn’t mean that their branding is good. Take this example – TalkTalk are known for not having the best customer service. Yet, they are still a successful business and popular for many people around the world. On the flip side to this, it can be also be said that a brand doesn’t need to be popular just to be good! Small businesses are a perfect example of this – their branding might be absolutely spot on but they might not be that well-known. So, what we’re saying is, it’s easy to mistake that your branding isn’t good enough just because you’re not a well-known business – it can take a very long time to gain that popularity, but it will come quicker if you persist and don’t give up hope with your great branding.
Overall, you can see here that there are so many other elements to your business brand, rather than just a logo. It’s surprising how many business owners create their logo and then assume that the rest is an easy ride!
Don’t let the time and effort branding takes put you off though; once you have gone through each point above (and a little more), you will definitely get a clearer understanding about the personality of your business, and hopefully this will then come across in your advertising.
Logos are crucial, but they are only the apple to your pie. Who wants just the apple when there’s a whole apple pie to be eaten!
So, our message to you is IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT YOUR LOGO – It is your whole brand which will help make your business a success.
